I can’t wait to watch the debate Tuesday night. Three key issues seem to be top of mind for most Americans: the economy, immigration, and reproductive rights. However, I suspect crime rates and criminal justice may be discussed too.

Crime is a hot topic. The issue, however, is complex and cannot always be reduced to a simple pithy 30-second answer. 

The question for many people: Is crime rising or declining? According to national reports, violent crime has dropped since 2022 and is at or near modern lows. However, the public’s perception may be different — and perception often defines reality. It will be interesting to see how the candidates address this issue.

As a criminal justice reform advocate, I hope Vice President Harris outlines her vision for the nation as to police reform, the death penalty, sentencing, crime prevention, and safety. Some advocates are pushing Harris to adopt a reform agenda. Let’s see what she has to say.
