Republicans say Make America Safe Again. Yet, nationwide violent crime has been declining since 2022? 

Former President Donald Trump and other Republicans have campaigned on a platform of how they will make America safe again.  At the presidential debate, Trump stated that “crime is through the roof” and at the Republican National Convention, Texas Senator Ted Cruz alleged that, “[e]very day, Americans are dying-murdered, assaulted, raped by illegal immigrants that the Democrats have released.” 

Putting this inflammatory  rhetoric aside, statistics contradict their claims. According to national FBI crime data, violent crime has decreased over the past two years:

Murder & manslaughter down 11%; the biggest drop in 20 years

Rape down 9.4%

Violent Crime down 3.0%

Robbery down 0.3%

Aggravated Assault down 2.8%

In fact, the report showed that violent crime is back to pre-pandemic levels which is comparable to 1990s rates. 

Unfortunately, the goal of these false and incendiary claims seems to be to scare Americans into voting for Trump and other Republicans based on untruths. As Americans, we deserve better — much better. We need leaders to utilize data to inform policy, guide law enforcement and prosecutors and keep communities safe.
