International Women’s Day

When I was in high school, I often wished I could live in a world where women and men were equal. Not the same — just equal access to social, political and economic opportunities.  I always sensed and felt the stark inequalities. For instance, I noticed that some jobs that were accessible to men, for women, were always just out of reach. And, of course, the pay disparity was clear and persistent. In college, I asked myself, “Well, why can’t a woman do this job? Why is a woman being paid less?”

I didn't understand why there were so many social rules that seemed designed only to limit a woman’s choices or how she was perceived and treated. I didn’t know it then, but I have always been a feminist, meaning someone wanting equality.

Today, I want to honor all the women—internationally—who have had the courage to ask the same question, “Why can’t I do this too?” Let’s celebrate their resilience to step into their power and do what they want, in the way they choose. As women around the world, we have a superpower, the gift of just being women. We are truly magic.

Let’s commemorate International Women’s Day together.
